Javier Fernández is one of the most decorated figure skaters in Spanish sporting history: two-time world champion, seven-time European champion, Olympic bronze medallist at Pyeongchang 2018. This three-part documentary series from RTVE tells his story in full, from a childhood in a country where ice skating barely existed as a concept, to the heights of a career that redefined what Spanish sport could achieve.
Fernández speaks candidly throughout, tracing the sacrifices made by his family, the coaches who shaped him, and the rivals who pushed him. The series pays particular attention to the psychological cost of elite competition. Anxiety, the seductive pull of success, the fear of falling short: these are not treated as footnotes but as central to understanding who he is and how he competed.
The tone is honest rather than celebratory. Setbacks are given the same weight as victories, and the question of what comes after a career built around a single pursuit is treated with real seriousness.
Directed by Roberto Roldán and Santi Aguado, and winner of the Cannes Corporate Media and TV Awards in 2023, the series works both as a portrait of an exceptional athlete and as a thoughtful examination of what elite sport demands of the people who pursue it.
