They call it White Mars. The Princess Elisabeth station sits in silence on an icy Antarctic plain, the first polar base on the continent to run entirely on renewable energy. For four months, around forty people live and work there, cut off from the rest of the world, each absorbed in a mission that most people would never accept.
This Belgian documentary series from director Xavier Ziomek follows the Ice Rangers, the men and women responsible for keeping the station operational day to day. It is observational filmmaking at its most immersive, tracing their routines, their tensions, and the private negotiations they make with isolation. What draws someone to a life like this? How do you manage relationships, emotion, and identity when the nearest city is thousands of kilometres away?
Running alongside the personal stories are the scientific questions the station exists to answer. The research conducted here has direct relevance to climate systems far beyond Antarctica, and the series gives those implications genuine weight without reducing them to abstraction.
The result is a portrait of a community at the edge of the habitable world, where the personal and the planetary are in constant, quiet conversation with each other.
