A Plan for Paradise

Kathmandu is expanding faster than it can absorb its own growth. Nepal's response is audacious: commission a brand-new city for 600,000 residents in the Kathmandu Valley, and hand the task to Finnish architect Pekka Helin and his firm, Helin & Co Architects.

Director Kati Juurus follows Helin and his team from the earliest planning meetings, offering a close, observational view of a project unlike anything the experienced architect has attempted before. The scale alone is formidable. The cultural distance is something else entirely.

What emerges is a candid portrait of two very different worldviews trying to find common ground. Helin's team arrives with plans for a modern, sustainable smart city. The Nepalese side brings centuries of tradition, sacred geography, and a set of non-negotiables that no blueprint can simply override. Relocating temples is not an option. The cows stay. The process, for all its genuine mutual respect, generates friction, bafflement, and moments of quiet absurdity.

A Plan for Paradise asks what it means to design a good life for people whose idea of a good life is shaped by an entirely different world. The question is never quite resolved, and that is exactly what makes the film worth watching.
