In Cuba today, the murals of revolutionary heroes are literally peeling from the walls. The paint fades, and with it, something harder to name.
Director Pertti Pesonen spent time on the ground observing what economic collapse looks like in practice, not as a statistic but as a daily, grinding reality. Food shortages are not occasional disruptions but a permanent condition. Inflation has made ordinary purchases out of reach for many. Poverty, once officially denied, is visible everywhere.
Cuba's Fading Revolution follows ordinary Cubans as they move through a system that promised them security and delivered something far more precarious. The film does not position itself as a political argument. It watches, and lets what it finds speak for itself.
Produced by Yle and directed by Pesonen in 2022, the documentary arrives at a moment when Cuba's internal contradictions have become impossible to contain. The failed economic reforms of recent years accelerated a crisis that was already deepening. What emerges is a portrait of a society caught between an ideology it grew up with and a present that no longer matches its promises.
Quietly observed and carefully composed, the film offers acquisitions teams a timely, substantive document of a country in profound transition.
