Arja Ahtaanluoma spent eight years without hands. Then came a call that would change everything.
Directed by Kati Laukkanen and filmed over four years, this Finnish documentary follows Arja and the medical team at Helsinki University Hospital as they prepare for the country's first hand transplant. Chief Hand Surgeon Jorma Ryhänen leads a procedure that has never before been performed in Finland, and the film moves between the clinical and the deeply personal, tracing what it takes to reach an operating table and what happens long after leaving it.
The wait for a donor is not a passive one. Arja's life, her emotional world, her particular way of existing in the body she has, comes through with quiet intimacy. The film asks difficult questions without pressing too hard for answers. What does it mean to receive something that once belonged to someone else? What is gained, and what does that gain cost?
Small moments carry enormous weight here. Painting her nails for the first time. Learning again what touch feels like.
A portrait of one woman and one surgical team, The Hand is also a meditation on the body, on waiting, and on what it means to begin again.
