What does it mean to be intelligent? The question seems straightforward until you start watching a bird solve a problem it has never encountered before, or a slime mould find the most efficient route through a maze without anything resembling a brain.
Directed by Ari Häkkinen, this Finnish documentary turns a careful eye on the behaviour of birds, butterflies, plants, and slime moulds, using close observation to probe how intelligence and consciousness manifest across radically different forms of life. The science is precise, the imagery quiet and absorbing.
The film's deeper provocation is aimed at the observer rather than the observed. Every judgment about which species are capable of thought, feeling, or intention reveals as much about human perception as it does about the animal or plant in question. The criteria we use, the instincts we dismiss, the behaviours we choose to measure — all of it reflects a human framework that the film gently but persistently interrogates.
The result is a documentary that moves between the biological and the philosophical without losing its footing in either. Grounded, thought-provoking, and visually attentive, The Wise Animal asks audiences to reconsider what they think they already know about the minds around them.
