In the autumn of 1556, a weary and ailing Charles V made his final journey across Spain to the remote Monastery of Yuste, where he would spend his last days in near-solitude. This historical docudrama series takes that final passage as its starting point, using it to trace the full arc of a life defined by perpetual motion.
Born in Ghent in 1500, Charles inherited an empire of staggering complexity before he was twenty. Kingdoms, conflicts, and continents pulled him in different directions for decades. Yet the man at the centre of this vast political world was, by many accounts, desolate and withdrawn, someone who arrived at the end of his life feeling he had achieved very little of what he had set out to accomplish.
The series follows his routes across Europe through the format of a travel journal, reconstructing the landscapes, courts, and campaigns he passed through. Dramatic recreations sit alongside commentary from leading historians, creating a portrait that is as personal as it is political.
Director Juan Frutos and producer RTVE bring rigour and visual care to a figure who shaped the sixteenth century more than almost any other. The result is a study in power, fatigue, and the distance between ambition and legacy.
