August 1973. Johan Cruyff lands at El Prat airport to a crowd of euphoric supporters, and FC Barcelona's long nightmare seems, at last, to be ending. The club had gone fourteen years without a league title. Something had to give.
What followed his arrival was celebrated as a triumph of ambition. What preceded it has remained largely hidden.
This investigative documentary series reconstructs the secret history of the most expensive transfer of its era, drawing on private archives and previously unseen material. The negotiations that brought Cruyff from Amsterdam to Catalonia involved far more than money and football. There were clandestine meetings on the outskirts of Amsterdam, documented blackmail, investigations stretching across international borders, and a confrontation with the political realities of Franco's Spain.
The series examines how far a club will go, and what it is prepared to risk, when it believes one man can change everything. It does so with the rigour of a criminal investigation rather than the warmth of a nostalgia piece.
Produced by 3Cat and Justin Webster Productions, and directed by David Fernández de Castro and Lluís Canut, The Signing recovers a story that football history has largely chosen to forget.
