On the first night of carnival on the island of Néboa, off the coast of Galicia, a teenage girl is found dead in O Burato do Demo, a cave steeped in local legend. The discovery is not the beginning of something new. Bodies appeared in that same place in 1919 and 1989, each time triggering a sequence of five further murders across the eight days of the festival. None of those crimes were ever solved.
Local belief points to the Urco, a wolf-headed figure said to emerge from the sea in chains to take the living. The creature is also a centrepiece of the island's carnival tradition, which means the line between folk ritual and genuine terror is difficult to hold.
Monica, a homicide lieutenant with the Guardia Civil, arrives on the island with her daughter in tow. Both are fleeing something. Paired with Carmela, the local sergeant who has her own ties to Néboa's past, she works to separate myth from evidence before the carnival ends.
Winner of the Mestre Mateo Award for Best Television Series, Néboa is a dark, atmospheric Spanish crime series rooted in Galician folklore, built around a mystery that has endured for over a century.
