Alix Mongeau is not a politician. She is a nail technician, a single mother in her late twenties, and a woman with no particular ambition beyond getting through the week. When a friend asks her to stand as a paper candidate for a minor party in an unwinnable district, she says yes almost without thinking. The role is a formality. A favour. Nothing more.
Then she wins.
Loosely inspired by a true story and created by Isabelle Langlois, The Candidate is a French-Canadian comedy drama that finds its energy in the collision between ordinary life and the bizarre machinery of politics. Alix arrives in a world she does not understand and was never meant to enter, and the series watches, with real warmth and comic precision, as she tries to find her footing. The writing keeps her grounded rather than caricatured, and Catherine Chabot's performance, recognised with a Gémeaux Award, gives Alix an interior life that holds the comedy together.
Beneath the fish-out-of-water premise runs something more considered: questions about who gets to participate in public life, and what it costs someone like Alix to try. A series with both wit and substance, produced for Radio-Canada by Encore Television.
