Spain, 1899. A stately apartment building in a prosperous city neighbourhood becomes the meeting point of two worlds that rarely speak directly to each other. Upstairs, wealthy families carry the weight of secrets, frustrated ambitions, and marriages worn thin by time. Below stairs, a generation of maids and tradespeople, most of them migrants from rural Spain, build their lives in the margins of someone else's comfort.
When Carmen arrives at Acacias 38, she comes as a fugitive. Fleeing a violent husband she believes she has killed, and a newborn daughter she was forced to leave behind, she reinvents herself under a new name and finds work in the very household where an impossible love is already waiting. Her husband, it turns out, survived.
The building holds many such stories. Across its four floors, desire runs alongside resentment, loyalty sits next to betrayal, and social performance barely conceals personal crisis. The class divide is ever-present but never simple. The rich are not immune to suffering, and the poor are not without pride.
Produced by RTVE and Boomerang TV and broadcast between 2015 and 2021, Acacias 38 is a long-running ensemble drama with the texture of a period novel and the momentum of daily serialised storytelling.
