Seen from above, through the eyes of a soaring sea eagle, Finland's forests stretch out as a vast and quietly sovereign world. The Bear Forest is a nature series for young children that follows this kingdom through the turning of the seasons, with the bear at its centre — a watchful, unhurried presence who introduces her cubs to the life of the forest, swims in still lakes at nightfall, and moves through the landscape with a calm authority.
Each episode draws in other inhabitants of this northern world: wolverines, wolves, saltwater porpoises, and, as the year turns toward winter, a pale relative of the bear appearing high on mountain peaks. The series was built from years of patient, authentic wildlife footage by cinematographer Taito Siira, and narrator Noora Peltokukka guides young viewers through with a gentle, story-like voice that keeps the wonder close without overwhelming it.
Produced by Yle and directed by Jari Sirniö, The Bear Forest treats its preschool audience with care and respect — for the animals, for the silence of the forest, and for the rhythms of the natural year. It is Finnish nature filmmaking at its most attentive, offered in a form that young children can genuinely inhabit.
