Alvar Aalto shaped the built world with a philosophy rooted in human experience rather than spectacle. This single documentary by director Virpi Suutari approaches his legacy through a series of intimate conversations with architects, colleagues, and long-time admirers who knew his work deeply and personally.
Among those speaking are Australian Pritzker Prize-winner Glenn Murcutt and Finnish architects Juhani Pallasmaa and Kristian Gullichsen. Their reflections move between the personal and the philosophical, tracing how Aalto understood natural light, terrain, scale, and the sensory life of a space. The interviews are conducted within Aalto's own buildings, allowing the architecture to speak alongside the people who love it.
The film also raises a pointed contemporary question. As modern construction trends toward minimal apartments and high-concept statement buildings, what has been lost? The interviewees position Aalto's humanist spatial thinking in sharp contrast to these developments, without ever reducing him to a symbol or a lesson.
Rare footage of daily life in Aalto's studio adds another layer, offering a glimpse of the working environment behind some of the twentieth century's most significant architecture. The result is a portrait that is both reverential and genuinely interrogative.
