Finnish nature is often celebrated for its photogenic charm, its pristine forests and the creatures easy to love. This documentary turns its attention elsewhere.
Directed by Jari Salonen, Nature's Rejects examines the species that most people would rather avoid: snakes, spiders, mosquitoes, stag flies, barnacle geese, cormorants. The animals that provoke fear, disgust, or simple irritation. Finland has a deep cultural relationship with the natural world, yet that familiarity has not prevented a growing distance, a spread of phobias and anxieties that colour how ordinary people encounter wildlife today.
The film takes these reactions seriously without simply validating them. Instead, it asks what lies behind our aversions and what we lose when we let them go unexamined. Each creature, however unwelcome, occupies a place in the ecological cycle, and biodiversity decline makes that interdependence harder to ignore.
Shot in HD by NaturPro Films and Yle, the documentary balances natural history observation with a quietly urgent perspective on our relationship with the living world. It does not argue that disliked species should be loved. It makes a more honest case: that they matter, regardless.
A thoughtful single documentary with a genuinely distinctive angle on wildlife filmmaking.
