Kaija Saariaho grew up in Helsinki, a shy girl who felt the weight of music long before she felt entitled to add her voice to it. Director Riitta Rask traces that journey across seven decades, from the Rudolf Steiner school and the Sibelius Academy to Freiburg and eventually Paris, where Saariaho built one of the most singular careers in contemporary classical music.
The film moves between continents and contexts, following rehearsals, masterclasses, and performances while drawing on intimate testimony from family members, colleagues, and collaborators including director Peter Sellars, writer Sofi Oksanen, and soprano Anu Komsi. Her opera Innocence, addressing the trauma of school violence, is seen in rehearsal at the Finnish National Opera, offering a rare window into the making of a work that drew international attention on its premiere.
The documentary closes in Venice, where Saariaho receives the Biennale's Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. It is a quietly earned moment in a portrait shaped by decades of persistence.
Shot across Helsinki, Paris, Barcelona, and beyond, Echoes of the Universe is also, without making a point of it, a film about what it meant to be a woman working at the edges of a field that had little room for her.
