Elina Mäkelä is 28 years old, Finnish, and utterly at home in water that would incapacitate most people within minutes. Her goal is the Polar Ice Mile, a cold-water swimming event held in the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard, where temperatures hover near freezing and the margin between endurance and catastrophe is narrow.
Director Lauri Danska follows Elina through her preparation with an observational precision that keeps the focus tightly on her as an individual, her training, her psychology, and the physical realities her body must absorb. Alongside the athletic journey, the film moves into laboratory settings, where researchers examine how cold exposure affects human physiology, from the rate at which hypothermia sets in to the factors that accelerate it: fatigue, dehydration, age, illness.
The scientific thread opens into something broader. Cold has a dual life in medicine. It can save as well as destroy, deployed in surgical procedures at the outermost edges of human intervention or encountered as a lethal force in Arctic military operations. Danska holds both realities in tension without resolving them cleanly.
Whether Elina completes the Ice Mile, and what it costs her, is a question the film earns the right to ask.
