Brussels, 29 May 1985. Tens of thousands of football supporters arrive at Heysel Stadium for the European Cup final between Liverpool and Juventus, expecting an evening of celebration. Within hours, 39 people are dead and nearly 600 injured.
Forty years on, this rigorous documentary returns to one of the darkest days in European football history, drawing on archival footage shot by an RTS team that has never been broadcast in full. The images are stark and direct, stripping away any distance the intervening decades might have allowed.
The film reconstructs the events through the testimonies of those present: a police commissioner who recalls the security failures, a gendarmerie captain who describes the chaotic response, a photojournalist who documented the horror as it happened, and a Liverpool hooligan who speaks about his role without apparent regret. Together, these accounts build a precise and uncomfortable picture of how institutional neglect and a culture of violence created the conditions for catastrophe.
Heysel 1985 does not treat the disaster as a closed chapter. From Hillsborough to more recent tragedies, the film asks whether the events of that night were a moment of reckoning or simply a warning that went unheeded.
