Sweden now has one of the highest per capita rates of gun violence in the European Union. The crisis did not emerge overnight, and this documentary from director Raül Gallego Abellán works to understand how a country long associated with social progressivism arrived at a moment where children as young as eight are being recruited into criminal networks.
The film gains rare, close access to teenage hitmen, gang members, and police officers, allowing those inside the crisis to speak for themselves. What emerges is a portrait shaped by segregation, alienation, and legal gaps that gangs have learned to exploit with precision. Swedish law means children under fifteen cannot be prosecuted, and criminal organisations have responded accordingly, advertising jobs online and targeting the youngest and most vulnerable.
The testimonies are stark. Young men describe feeling shut out of Swedish society long before anyone offered them a weapon. Alongside them, social workers and investigators try to articulate what is being lost when institutions fail to recognise that these recruits are also victims.
Shot with the intimacy of observational filmmaking and the rigour of investigative journalism, the film received an International Emmy Award in 2024 and an Online Journalism Award in 2025.
