In the forests of Finland, a quieter drama plays out each season. Some birds have found a way to endure the predators and punishing northern winters that would defeat others: they nest in cavities, tucked inside the shelter of wood and bark. Petri Merta's documentary introduces the full breadth of these species, from the ten-gram willow tit to the broad-winged Ural owl, giving each a distinct, patient portrait in its natural habitat.
Filmed without a presenter and without contrivance, the camera earns its proximity through time and stillness. What emerges is a close, specific picture of birds whose survival depends on a resource that is quietly disappearing. Rigorous commercial forestry and the retreat of old-growth forest are eroding the conditions these species need. Climate change adds further pressure, shifting the rhythms that cavity nesters have adapted to over centuries.
The film holds these threats at a considered distance, neither dramatising nor minimising them. The weight comes from observation itself: the more closely the camera watches, the more clearly the fragility becomes apparent. Mertavision's production is careful and unhurried, the kind of documentary that trusts its subject to generate its own sense of urgency.
