In the early twentieth century, hundreds of medieval murals were stripped from the walls of Spanish churches and carried away, sometimes across continents. The Empty Walls reconstructs that story, tracing the methods used to detach and transport these fragile Romanesque paintings, and examining the individuals whose ambitions, commercial interests, and institutional drives made it possible.
The film moves between the collectors, dealers, and museum directors who shaped the fate of this heritage, revealing the motivations behind decisions that were rarely as altruistic as they appeared. Some works ended up in foreign collections; others formed the nucleus of major Romanesque painting museums now celebrated internationally. In both cases, the communities left behind had little say in what was taken from them.
Directed by Isabel Soria and José Manuel Herraiz, the documentary resists simple condemnation. Instead, it asks harder questions about who has the authority to preserve art, and what is lost when cultural memory is relocated to a gallery wall far from where it was made. The empty church interiors that give the film its title are not just an absence of paint. They are the residue of a larger story about power, ownership, and the price of patrimony.
