Rudolf Hess spent the final decades of his life as the sole prisoner inside Spandau, a vast Allied prison in Berlin built to hold dozens. For nearly ten years, the only person permitted to speak with him in private was Charles Gabel, a French Protestant chaplain — and the grandfather of this documentary's two directors.
Idriss Gabel and Marie Calvas turn the camera on their own family history, interviewing Charles about a relationship that was by any measure extraordinary and morally difficult to place. As Hitler's former deputy and a convicted war criminal sentenced at Nuremberg, Hess was a figure of immense historical weight. Yet Gabel's role was pastoral: to reach the man inside the ideology, to listen, to accompany, and to consider the question of forgiveness.
The film does not resolve that question easily, nor does it try to. Instead, it follows Gabel as he reflects on what it meant to pursue the humanity of someone history had made into a symbol of absolute evil. His grandchildren probe gently but without sentimentality, drawing out a story that touches on faith, duty, and the limits of moral judgment.
A quiet, searching portrait of an unlikely relationship, and of what it costs to bear witness to it.
