In southern Italy, a region near Naples has earned a devastating nickname: the Land of Fires. For decades, the Camorra mafia has run a vast illegal waste operation, burying and burning hazardous materials across farmland and communities with near-total impunity. The air is thick with toxic smoke. The water is contaminated. And the children are dying of cancer at rates that have shocked researchers across Europe.
Directed by Pertti Pesonen for Yle, this Finnish documentary puts human faces at the centre of an environmental catastrophe. Grieving mother Marzia Cacciapoli carries the personal cost of this crisis, while toxicologist Antonio Marfella provides the scientific framework for understanding its full scale. Together, they form the spine of an investigation that traces not only criminal networks but the government failures that allowed them to operate for so long.
The film arrives in the wake of a landmark 2025 European Court of Human Rights ruling against Italy, a moment that gives the story both urgency and historical weight. Questions of accountability, public health, and the limits of institutional responsibility run through every frame. Whether justice can follow the ruling, and whether recovery is even possible, the documentary does not resolve easily. Nor should it.
