Founded in 1937 at the instigation of violinist Eugène Ysaÿe and Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, the Queen Elisabeth Competition has grown into one of the most rigorous and closely followed international music contests in the world. Each edition focuses on a single discipline, rotating between violin, piano, voice, and cello, drawing young virtuosos from across the globe who compete across multiple rounds for prizes and, more significantly, for the kind of visibility that shapes careers.
The competition's structure is exacting. Candidates move through preliminary sessions and semi-finals before the finalists face one of the contest's most distinctive challenges: a week in residency at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, where they prepare a newly commissioned work in complete isolation, to be performed with orchestra at the finals. No external assistance. No safety net.
Broadcast live by RTBF across television, radio, and streaming platforms, the competition brings classical music performance to a wide public in real time. The jury is prestigious, the rules are strict, and the atmosphere is one of genuine national engagement, with the Royal Family and Belgian public forming an unusually warm backdrop to an otherwise intensely competitive event.
For acquisitions teams seeking high-quality classical music content with global reach and institutional prestige, the archive runs from 1937 to the present.
