A dinner party. Seven middle-aged friends gathered around a table, talking, laughing, carefully skirting the edges of things they would rather not say. Then Satu arrives late and alone, and a single offhand question changes the texture of the evening entirely.
Written by Suna Vuori and directed by Pia Andell, this Finnish short film works entirely through the accumulation of small moments: a pause before answering, a glance that says more than the words that follow, a joke that doesn't quite land because the room has quietly shifted. The story belongs to all seven characters at once, each carrying something unresolved, something they have not yet found the language for or the courage to face.
There is no dramatic confrontation, no tidy resolution. The film trusts its audience to sit with the discomfort of recognising that middle age is full of unfinished business — in relationships, in self-understanding, in the conversations that get deferred year after year until the space for them quietly closes.
Winner of the Best Narrative Short and Best Finnish prizes at the Helsinki International Film Festival, Amidst is a precisely observed, quietly affecting work from a production team with a sure sense of how much can be said in thirty minutes.
