Julius grows up in a Lima palace. The household is vast, the family wealthy, the servants numerous, and the distance between these two worlds immense, even if the boy cannot yet name it.
Set in 1950s and 60s Peru, this Spanish TV film adapts Alfredo Bryce Echenique's landmark Latin American novel through the eyes of a quiet, perceptive child who absorbs everything and understands far too much, far too soon. Julius loses his father young. His mother remarries a man who has no patience for him. His brothers offer nothing resembling warmth. The one person who truly sees him is Vilma, his nana, and when she is torn from his life through an act of violence committed within his own family, something in Julius breaks that cannot be repaired.
Director Rossana Díaz Costa keeps the camera close to Julius's inner life, tracing the slow erosion of innocence as class cruelty, racism, and abuse of power reveal themselves not as exceptions but as the architecture of the world he inhabits. The period setting is rendered with care, though the social dynamics it depicts feel anything but distant.
A quiet, affecting portrait of a boy learning what the adult world costs, and who pays for it.
