Joan Miró arrived at painting not through privilege or encouragement but through stubbornness and need. Shy, introverted, and single-minded, the young Catalan artist spent his early years fighting for something his conservative father could barely bring himself to accept. This film follows that struggle from its difficult beginnings in Barcelona through to Miró's eventual recognition on the world stage.
Directed by Oriol Ferrer and produced by 3Cat and Setmàgic, the film traces a formative arc — from a son's quiet defiance, through the hard lessons of repeated failure, to the liberation of Paris in the early twentieth century. In that city, Miró enters a world charged with new ideas and encounters figures who would shape the century's art: Picasso, Breton, Matisse, Hemingway. He finds his footing in the Surrealist movement, though the gathering threat of war in Europe casts uncertainty over everything.
The film holds its focus firmly on the private man rather than the famous work. Period Barcelona and Paris are rendered with precision and atmosphere, giving the story a strong sense of place and time.
A portrait of artistic formation told with restraint, it is at its most affecting when charting the space between a young man's vision and the world's readiness to receive it.
