Rolli and the Golden Key

A flock of storks crosses a misty sky, each carrying a white bundle. One falls. A girl named Juniper lands in a world unlike anything she has known, with no memory of where she came from or who she is.

Lost in an enchanted forest, she finds an unlikely companion in Rolli, an old troll who agrees to share his own long and eventful story. As the two grow closer, their friendship becomes something neither of them expected. And when a genuine threat begins to close in on the fairytale woods, they realise that finding answers and facing danger may be the same journey.

Based on the beloved Finnish character created by Allu Tuppurainen, who also wrote the screenplay, this 2013 feature from director Taavi Vartia blends fantasy, music, and adventure into a story pitched at family audiences but anchored in something more quietly affecting: the question of where we belong and what we owe each other.

The film moves through circus lights, deep forest, and the warmth of an unlikely bond, carrying its young protagonist, and its audience, through a world that feels genuinely magical without ever losing sight of the people at its centre.
