When Isabel la Católica dies in early 16th-century Spain, the crown of Castile becomes the object of an open and ruthless contest. Her widower, Fernando de Aragón, and her husband, Felipe el Hermoso, lord of Flanders, both move to seize power, each deploying alliance, deception, and manipulation in pursuit of the throne. Caught between them is Juana, the legitimate heir, a young queen whose fragile state of mind makes her simultaneously the most important figure in the kingdom and the most vulnerable.
The film, directed by Jordi Frades from a screenplay by José Luis Martín, is rooted in documented history and rendered with the full weight of a large-scale costume production. The royal courts of Castile and Flanders are recreated with care, but the real terrain is psychological. Juana's emotional condition is not merely a subplot; it is the axis on which everything turns. Both men need to control her, and both exploit her.
What emerges is a portrait of power stripped of romance, in which loyalty is a performance and family ties become instruments of strategy. The question the film circles is whether Juana's instability is genuine, convenient, or something that those around her have quietly arranged.
