A rebellious teenager named Teresa picks up a copy of The Book of Life, the celebrated autobiography of Saint Teresa of Jesus, and finds herself drawn into the convulsive Spain of the sixteenth century.
Directed by Jorge Dorado and written by Juanma Romero, this RTVE feature film uses the device of a contemporary young woman's reading to frame a dramatised portrait of one of history's most formidable religious figures. The result is a period thriller that moves between two eras, connecting modern restlessness with the extraordinary courage of a woman who defied the Inquisition and founded the Order of the Barefoot Carmelites.
The film does not treat Teresa de Jesús as a distant saint. It renders her as someone driven, daring, and willing to act against considerable institutional power. Escape sequences, religious conflict, and moments of genuine suspense give the narrative propulsive energy, while the period setting is brought to life with care and precision.
Starring Marian Álvarez and Antonio de la Torre among an accomplished ensemble, Teresa was selected for the San Sebastián International Film Festival in 2015. It offers acquisitions teams a distinctive historical drama with broad audience appeal and a strong central figure at its heart.
