Spain in the fifteenth century was a kingdom pulled in competing directions, and at the centre of that turbulence stood a woman who refused the role history had prepared for her. Isabel chronicles the life of Isabella I of Castile, from her childhood at the margins of a fractious court to her reign as one of the most consequential monarchs in European history.
The series opens inside the court of Henry IV, where political survival requires constant negotiation and loyalty is never fixed. Isabella's path to the throne runs through personal sacrifice, dynastic manoeuvrings, and a marriage to Ferdinand of Aragon that is as much a political calculation as it is a genuine partnership. Together they are formidable, though their alliance is tested repeatedly.
As the story moves forward, the scale of events grows. The War of Succession, the fall of Granada, the expulsion of the Jews, Columbus's first voyage, and the personal losses of Isabella's later years all find their place in a narrative that never loses sight of the woman at its heart.
Directed by Jordi Frades and produced by RTVE and Diagonal TV, Isabel won multiple major Spanish television awards and brought in international recognition for its craft, its performances, and the ambition of its historical vision.
