Madrid, 1936. As the Civil War tears Spain apart, Dr. Guillermo García, a Republican physician living under a false identity, makes a decision that will define the rest of his life. When he shelters a wounded spy, Manuel Arroyo, the two men form a bond forged in secrecy and shared risk that neither can easily escape.
Years later, Manuel returns from exile with a dangerous assignment. Together, the two men set out to infiltrate a clandestine network run by Nazi and Falangist operatives, smuggling war criminals out of Europe and into the safety of Franco's Spain and Perón's Argentina. To get inside, Manuel assumes the identity of a Spanish boxer with a dark wartime past. The deception is intricate, the stakes are real, and the historical context gives it a particular weight.
Adapted from Almudena Grandes' Premio Nacional de Narrativa-winning novel, this Spanish production spans four decades of the twentieth century, tracing the moral and personal costs of living in opposition to a dictatorship. The series moves between intimate character drama and espionage thriller with confidence, grounded in a period brought to life with evident care.
