The Finnish forest might seem like a place of stillness and calm. Meet the squirrels, and that impression vanishes immediately.
In Fluffy Tales, a short-form nature series for pre-schoolers produced by NaturPro Films and Yle, the trees are alive with racing, triple jumping, fur fashion, and the very serious business of stashing. These are squirrels with things to do and very little time to do them.
Between the high-speed pursuits, the forest's residents occasionally pause. Is a diet of sitting and eating all day actually healthy? What do the smallest creatures of the woodland truly mean to the world around them? These questions surface, are debated with great earnestness, and are then largely set aside in favour of nuts and dizzying speed.
The series is carried by a cast of distinct characters. Vieno brings a quietly poetic sensibility to forest life, while Touho keeps interrupting with wooden-footed jokes that nobody asked for and everyone tolerates. Their contrasting personalities give each short episode its own flavour, even as the daily rhythms of squirrel life remain gloriously consistent.
Directed by Jari Salonen, Fluffy Tales ran for two seasons and offers a gentle, genuinely funny entry point into the natural world for very young audiences.
