When Argentina's football team returned home as world champions in December 2022, Buenos Aires erupted. Five million people flooded the streets in the largest public gathering the country had ever seen. For a brief moment, Lionel Messi and his teammates gave a nation something to celebrate.
The moment did not last.
Director Pertti Pesonen's documentary examines what lies beneath the euphoria: a country in serious economic distress, with inflation exceeding one hundred percent and nearly half the population living below the poverty line. The peso is losing value faster than most Argentinians can keep up with. The threat of national bankruptcy is not abstract — it is felt daily, in markets, in homes, in the choices people make simply to get by.
The World Cup victory becomes a lens through which to understand a society caught between collective joy and systemic collapse. The contrast is stark and telling. A record-breaking celebration in one of the world's great cities, set against the grinding reality of an economy in freefall.
Produced by Yle, this Finnish documentary offers a clear-eyed account of Argentina at a crossroads, asking what a trophy means to a country that cannot afford to eat.
