On the morning of 30 December 2000, Josep Maria Vilà set out with his girlfriend and friends for what promised to be a clear, unhurried day in the eastern Pyrenees. By early afternoon, without warning, the mountain had become something else entirely.
A sudden storm, unforecast and ferocious, swept across Balandrau with winds exceeding 100 kilometres per hour. Temperatures plummeted to thirty below zero. Visibility collapsed to almost nothing. What had been a holiday outing became a sixteen-hour ordeal of cold, disorientation, and desperate endurance. Ten people did not survive.
Directed by Guille Cascante and written by Enric Álvarez and Jordi Morató, this single documentary reconstructs the tragedy through survivor testimony, archive material, and meticulous dramatic recreation. Its emotional centre is Vilà himself, then twenty-seven, who spent days trapped on the mountain after the storm passed, watching those closest to him die before rescuers finally reached him.
The film is not simply a chronicle of disaster. It is a portrait of what extreme experience does to a person, how it breaks a life apart and forces it to be rebuilt from different materials. Honest, carefully made, and grounded in first-hand account, it treats a devastating event with the seriousness it deserves.
