The Balearic Islands are one of the Mediterranean's most recognisable tourist destinations, famous for white sand beaches and a nightlife that draws millions each year. Yet behind that image lies a world largely unknown even to the people who visit it.
Across four seasons, director Rubén Casas Oché follows the extraordinary biodiversity of this western Mediterranean archipelago, capturing species found nowhere else on earth. Shot with 4K cameras and telephoto lenses reaching 1,200mm, the film draws on years of patient observation to reveal wildlife sequences of rare intimacy.
The natural history it tells is also a story under pressure. Mass tourism, unchecked urban development, and the slow disappearance of traditional rural life are pushing this ecosystem to its limits. The documentary frames these threats with clarity and urgency, setting the fragile reality of the islands against their glamorous international reputation.
Produced by Atlantia Media and RTVE, the film is a single-documentary format that works as both a landmark portrait of a specific place and a broader reflection on what Mediterranean Europe stands to lose. Its combination of spectacular cinematography with a direct environmental argument gives it strong appeal across natural history, geography, and documentary strands.
